MY MEMORIES

Florida Home

We had made tentative plans to find a more permanent winter housing and sell the motorhome. So in the Spring of 2015, we started looking at what was available. We were really thinking of a condo, but were open to a small furnished home. We investigated The Villages where my brother lived, but we thought it was too big and too crowded. Somehow, we stumbled onto The Plantation, a gated community of 5,500 residences and two 18-hole golf courses. With a realtor, we looked at a few furnished homes and only one caught our eye. We went back to it and a day later made what I thought was a lowball offer compared to the asking price. The owner countered the next day and we balked. The following day the lowball offer was accepted. It turns out the owner had two other offers but they were contingent on selling their home and/or financing. We were offering cash now. Within a week we were moving our things from the motorhome into our Florida home on the fairway of Number two hole on Otter Creek golf course in The Plantation. The Plantation is subdivided into many communities, our is called Belle Grove.

A couple months later it was time to head north for the summer and to put the motorhome on the market. It sold in September and in late October, we drove the Cadillac south to our winter home. The trip to Florida takes about 24 hours of driving. The first time we tried doing it in two 12-hour days. We were exhausted and there was nothing in the house to eat. We decided not to do that again. So we settled for two 10-hour days, plus four hours thus arriving around noon giving us time to get properly settled in. We decided not to do that again either. We drove it again, this time in the Mini Cooper. We left the Mini in Florida and started flying back and forth.
